RSI Extremes

Detects RSI readings below 25 or above 75 across multiple timeframes. Also identifies RSI divergences where price makes new highs/lows but RSI doesn't confirm.

What is this scanner?

The RSI Extremes scanner goes beyond simple overbought/oversold detection by combining multi-timeframe RSI alignment with divergence detection. When RSI drops below 25 (extreme oversold) or rises above 75 (extreme overbought) across multiple timeframes simultaneously, it signals a statistically rare exhaustion state.

The scanner also identifies RSI divergences — when price makes a new high but RSI doesn't confirm, or price makes a new low but RSI makes a higher low. Divergences are often the earliest warning of a momentum shift, sometimes appearing 5-10 candles before the actual reversal.

Origin & History

The Relative Strength Index was developed by J. Welles Wilder and published in his 1978 book 'New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems.' Wilder originally suggested 70/30 as overbought/oversold thresholds, but research has shown that for crypto perpetuals — with their higher volatility and 24/7 nature — 75/25 thresholds produce more reliable signals.

RSI divergence analysis was later formalized by technical analysts in the 1980s and 1990s, particularly in the work of Andrew Cardwell, who inverted much of Wilder's original interpretation. QSA uses Cardwell's insight that in strong trends, RSI rarely reaches oversold (for uptrends) or overbought (for downtrends) — making extreme readings in trending markets especially significant.

Detection Criteria

RSI Threshold

14-period RSI drops below 25 or rises above 75. These thresholds represent the top/bottom 10% of RSI readings in normal crypto market conditions.

Multi-Timeframe Stack

RSI is checked across 15m, 1h, and 4h timeframes. When all three are simultaneously extreme in the same direction, the signal strength is maximum.

Divergence Detection

Price makes a new swing high/low while RSI fails to confirm. Bearish divergence (price higher high, RSI lower high) signals weakening upside momentum.

Trend Context

The scanner evaluates whether the extreme RSI reading is consistent with the trend (momentum signal) or against it (reversal signal), categorizing signals accordingly.

Grading Breakdown

S

RSI below 20 or above 80 on both 1h and 4h with a confirmed divergence and a reversal candle. Extremely rare, extremely reliable.

A

RSI extreme on 1h with 4h confirming, multi-timeframe divergence or double-bottom/double-top RSI pattern.

B

Single-timeframe RSI extreme at 25/75 threshold. Valid signal but no divergence or multi-timeframe confirmation.

C

RSI approaching extreme (28-30 or 70-72) without reaching threshold. Monitor for development but not actionable yet.

Common Mistakes

Buying every RSI oversold reading in a downtrend. In bearish markets, RSI regularly hits 20-25 before recovering only briefly and declining again — wait for divergence.

Not combining with price action. RSI extremes need a reversal candle to confirm the oscillator is turning. A pin bar or engulfing at an extreme RSI is far more actionable.

Trading RSI divergences too early. Divergences can persist for many candles — don't enter on the first sign of divergence. Wait for price structure confirmation.

Using the same RSI thresholds across all assets. Highly volatile low-cap tokens regularly hit 10 or 90 — consider asset-specific thresholds rather than universal ones.

How to Trade

Entry Context

For extreme readings: enter on the first reversal candle after RSI shows the extreme. For divergences: enter when price breaks a recent swing level in the divergence direction, confirming the momentum shift.

Risk Management

Stop below the RSI extreme's price low (for longs) or above the high (for shorts). These are the natural invalidation levels. Risk 1-2% of portfolio. If RSI makes a new extreme, the thesis is weakened — reassess.

Target Framework

First target: RSI at neutral (50). Second target: RSI at the opposite moderate zone (55-60 for longs). In strong reversals, RSI often swings from one extreme to the other — hold a portion for maximum reversion.
