Detects Change of Character (CHoCH) by analyzing swing highs and lows. When a higher-low is broken in an uptrend (or lower-high in downtrend), it signals a potential trend reversal.
What is this scanner?
The Change of Character scanner detects the moment a market structure shifts — the earliest possible signal that an uptrend is turning into a downtrend (or vice versa). A CHoCH (Change of Character) occurs when price breaks a swing level that it had previously respected, signaling that the dominant side has lost control.
In an uptrend, higher highs and higher lows define structure. The first lower high that gets taken out is a CHoCH — not confirmation of reversal, but the earliest warning. This scanner fires at that exact moment, giving traders the opportunity to position ahead of the full trend change.
Origin & History
The concept of market structure — higher highs/higher lows for uptrends, lower highs/lower lows for downtrends — is foundational to Dow Theory, articulated by Charles Dow in the early 1900s. The specific term 'Change of Character' was popularized through Smart Money Concepts (SMC) trading, which became mainstream in retail crypto trading circles around 2020-2022.
SMC traders use CHoCH as the entry trigger rather than waiting for a full trend reversal confirmation. The tradeoff is higher frequency of signals with lower individual reliability — which is why QSA requires multi-timeframe confirmation before grading a CHoCH as actionable.

Swing Structure Mapping
The scanner maps all significant swing highs and lows using a fractal-based algorithm, identifying the current trend structure and the key levels that define it.
Structure Break
A candle closes beyond the most recent swing high (for bearish CHoCH) or swing low (for bullish CHoCH) that the trend had previously held, breaking the established structure.
Body Close Confirmation
The structure break must be confirmed by a candle body close beyond the level, not just a wick. Wick-only violations are filtered as potential stop hunts rather than genuine CHoCH events.
Multi-Timeframe Validation
The CHoCH is confirmed on at least 2 timeframes (e.g., 15m structure breaks confirmed on 1h). Single-timeframe structure breaks have much higher false positive rates.
Grading Breakdown
CHoCH on 1h+ timeframe confirmed on 4h structure map, with volume surging on the break candle and a clear shift from established trend.
Clean CHoCH with full body close, multi-timeframe confirmation, and above-average volume. Strong early reversal signal.
Valid CHoCH on primary timeframe but secondary timeframe shows neutral structure. Worth acting on but with appropriate size.
CHoCH on lower timeframe (15m) without higher timeframe confirmation. High false positive rate — use only for entries aligned with higher-timeframe bias.
Common Mistakes
Treating every CHoCH as a reversal trade. A CHoCH is the beginning of a possible trend change, not confirmation. Price often revisits the break level before committing to a new direction.
Ignoring the timeframe hierarchy. A 5-minute CHoCH means nothing if the 1-hour structure is intact and trending strongly.
Not waiting for a retest of the broken level. The best CHoCH entries come when price breaks structure, then pulls back to test the break level before continuing.
Confusing CHoCH with Break of Structure (BoS). A BoS confirms the trend continuation; a CHoCH signals a potential reversal — they require opposite responses.
How to Trade
Entry Context
After the CHoCH candle closes, wait for price to retrace to the broken swing level (now acting as new resistance for bearish CHoCH, or support for bullish). Enter on the retest with a confirmation candle.
Risk Management
Stop beyond the CHoCH candle extreme (high for bearish, low for bullish). If price returns beyond this level, the structure break was a false signal. Risk 1-2% of portfolio.
Target Framework
Target the next significant swing high/low in the new direction. For continuation, target 1.5-2x the move from the CHoCH point to the retest entry.
